Executive Summery
There is a significant impact from the modern technology to the Agri sector and especially as being a multi beneficial industry. Technology can assist not only plantation and manufacturing but also the sales and marketing sector to improve the industry in a consistent manner. Use of modern technology is a new and rapidly emerging concept in Agri sector world over and no exception for Sri Lanka moreover, which is perceived as one of the key revolutionizing principles of the twenty-first century. Its potential in the food industry has been highlighted in several studies in particular. The applications of modern technology in the Agri sector are only new emergent, but they are predicted to grow rapidly in the coming years predominantly in Sri Lanka.
This promising concept is currently being increasingly applied in the Agri industry and shows the signs of exponential intensification of use. The concept can be expected to have beneficial impacts throughout the Agri system, where it largely enable more precise management of resources, to personalized crops cultivation, which holds potential for enhancing high yielding crops, reduction in cost, more export revenue, creation of more employment, sustainable supply chain and improving living standards of the farmer community.
The project has identified the Agri sector as one of the key sectors for achieving better export performance in future due to the high demand in the export market. To achieve the level of exports that the government anticipates beyond 2021, the sector needs to overcome key challenges that inhibit its performance. The project maps 2 fruits value chains in Sri Lanka, mango and pineapple to identify opportunities.
