The cashew has been strongly associated with the culture of Sri Lanka for a long time, the cashew was introduced into Sri Lanka in ancient times and has been cultivated on the island for a long time. The economy of Sri Lanka continues to be dominated by small holder- agriculture and is highly dependent on the import-export economy. Cashew, an export crop, earns a large amount of foreign income. However, the overall contribution to the global market its only 2.5%.
Cashew mainly grows under dry climatic conditions. It is an evergreen tree with an extensive root system that helps tolerate a wide range of moisture levels and contributes to it being a highly drought resistant.
The cashew tree bears fruit approximately 3 to 4 years after planting and reaches maximum production in 9 to 10 years. Its flowers for about 2 to 3 months and the fruit matures two months after flowering. The cashew season when the cashew nuts are attached externally to the cashew apple, continue for about three months. Normal life span of a tree is about 30 years.
Considering the suitability of the condition for cashew cultivation 15 acres of cashew is expected to plant. While waiting for the first harvest the company has planned to start up a processing center with the use of the cashew apple to produce a wine. The first batch will be done during the season by using the cashew apple from the land. Further the cashew nuts will be processed for local and export market.
